Amnesty on illegally-built homes: Hope for expats in Spain

The announced amnesty on illegally-built homes in Andalucia is giving hope to thousands of expat homeowners in southern Spain.

It is estimated that more than 11,000 homeowners fearing the demolition of their homes may now be able to legalize their properties, even though the regional government stressed the fact that they could not yet guarantee the future of the homes of which most of them have been built on protected land. As a result, many of the affected expats are currently living without running water or electricity because their homes do not officially exist.

It is not clear whether the homeowners will have to pay for the legalization of their home homes.

As a result of a council study of the area, a part of Málaga especially popular with British and Irish expats, the amnesty was announced this week.
