007 in the dock - Sean Connery and his associates must Post €60m bail in Corruption Case |
|
A judge in Marbella has levied a bail of more than 60 million Euros on actor Sean Connery and the other principal defendants in a corruption case.
In addition, under indictment in the case are Connery’s wife, former Marbella Mayor Julian Muñoz and several partners of the law office representing the actor.
Judge Ricardo Puyol has given the accused 10 days to post the surety, the SER radio network reported.
In the eventuality that they cannot respond, their properties would be embargoed and if any of them declare themselves to be insolvent, tax authorities and police would be ordered to investigate to determine if they may have hidden any of their assets.
The ruling states, moreover, that the accused must respond jointly to the surety requirement.
Until 1999, Connery and his wife spent vacations in a chalet on their seaside parcel in Marbella, which now hosts a four-story building.
The corruption case, dubbed “Goldfinger” began with an investigation into the rezoning of Connery’s property to allow the construction of 72 luxury apartments.
The court is also probing possible tax evasion and money laundering in connection with the real estate transactions involving Connery’s parcel, known as Malibu. EFE
